London/Opatija
Fly to Venice and transfer by coach to your hotel in Opatija for a sixnight stay. Refresh yourself with a welcome drink before dinner at the hotel.
23 DECEMBER
Opatija
Opatija displays all the grandeur of a Victorian-era holiday resort. This beautiful location was popularised in the mid-19th century and soon became a favourite holiday retreat amongst the great and the good of Europe. The result is a selection of elegant villas, with the superb Villa Angiolina at its heart. We enjoy an included walking tour of the town this morning, beginning with a stroll through the town’s lovely park and along the seafront promenade, known as the Lungomare.
We then take a drive towards Moscenice, which has a pretty pebble beach. Above the village is Moscenice Draga. This small mediaeval town is set on a hilltop and offers wonderful views over the bay, and its baroque church and narrow lanes lend it an air of enchantment. We have included a guided tour through the town accompanied by the mayor, a visit to the town’s museum and a chance to taste the local grappa.
CHRISTMAS EVE
The Opatijan Riviera
The serene waters of Kvarner Bay are our destination today, as we include a boat trip with a difference. On board you will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Opatija, Lovran and Mount Ucka, while a Croatian singer, accompanied by local musicians, performs a selection of pieces from classic operas. Relax and enjoy the views and the music as you indulge in mulled wine and dried figs. Christmas Eve is the traditional time for celebrations in Croatia, and back at the hotel you will enjoy a typical Croatian seafood dinner. Later you will have the chance to visit one of the nearby churches for Midnight Mass.
CHRISTMAS DAY
Postojna Caves
After a leisurely Christmas breakfast we take a trip across the border to marvellous Slovenia and the superb Postojna Caves, a breathtaking labyrinth of fantastic subterranean caverns. Inside we find a living Nativity scene, complete with Joseph, Mary, Jesus and the three magi. Upon our return to Opatija you will have the chance to enjoy a special Christmas concert in the Crystal Hall of the Hotel Kvarner or the Church of St Jacob. Festive Christmas dinner this evening.
BOXING DAY
Opatija
Today you are free to relax, explore the town, take a stroll along the Lungomare, enjoy the leisure facilities at your hotel or perhaps visit Opatija’s recently opened spa centre.
27 DECEMBER
Rijeka
Rijeka is a bustling historic city, blessed with a wealth of fascinating sights and a blend of Roman, Gothic, baroque and 19th-century architecture. Not least of these is the St Vitus Cathedral, founded in 1638 by the Jesuits. The Modello Palace combines both Renaissance and baroque influences, and the remains of a Roman Praetorium can still be seen. Our sightseeing today takes us through the old town, to the old castle and the monastery above the city. There will also be time to visit the town’s Christmas market. This evening we have arranged a special farewell dinner in the restaurant at the exclusive Draga di Lovrana Hotel. The hotel enjoys a wonderful position in the hills above Opatija and the restaurant offers delightful local and international cuisine. Wine is included with dinner.
28 DECEMBER
Opatjia/London
After breakfast we take the coach back to Venice airport for our return flight.
